As the summertime heat gains momentum, FAB NYC is finding new ways to cool down. Hard at work in the FAB Lab, Betsy Imershein is plugging away to help us become a model-block for the East Village and Lower East Side, and Manhattan at large. Already, the FAB Goes Green campaign has helped increase awareness of energy efficiency programs and opportunities to arts organizations on the block and in the neighborhood. Details have been as small as replacing light bulbs and arranging ConEd energy assessments; but the encouraging efforts have done much more, implementing plans for long-term sustainability. Watch our video and see what Betsy has to say!

This last April, FAB NYC diverted 4 tons of reusable materials from the waste stream in an event called Load OUT. This unique re-use and recycle event aimed to increase the capacity of arts organizations to effectively reduce waste from their activities by providing a drop off site and connections to re-use and recycle groups. The event featured donations from 15 different arts organizations, including La MaMa E.T.C. and Classic Stage Company. The donated and useful materials, valued at more than $15,000, were then redistributed to 87 different artists and arts organizations from the five boroughs, who attended Load OUT. In the continuation of our public events, we are continuously seeking out new strategies to save energy and be green. Stay tuned for news about the annual FAB! Festival.

In the near future, on August 20th and 21st, we will be gathering nearly 50 volunteers in partnership with the White Roof Project to paint the block. There is an ungodly amount of heat caught up in black rooftops, and we want to cool down. By coating the roofs white and reflecting light, we will be contributing our efforts to reduce the effects of the urban heat island by reflecting 4 times the amount of sunlight, lowering the average temperature by nearly 80 degrees! The best part? We’ll be saving almost %50 on electricity bills!
